We did not relent on our call for a socially and environmentally just society &#8211; if anything, we stood stronger! <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now, as we reflect on the progress we have made in 2021, we would like to look back at the top moments we\u2019ve accomplished together with partners and allies this past year &#8211; moments we should all be proud of and thankful for<\/span><b>:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/justrecoverygathering.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Global Just Recovery Gathering<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that took place from 9 to 11 April was a celebratory moment that saw people from over 150 countries come together for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">interactive workshops, cultural sessions, and hands-on trainings that would help plant the seed of global solidarity, ushering in new energy in this crucial movement to halt the climate crisis.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the key take-aways from this was that climate justice is inextricably tied to the fights against racism, inequality, and hate &#8211; and moments like the Global Just Recovery Gathering remind us that we need to keep showing up, and to take a stand against both hateful, divisive political rhetoric and the willful denial of the multiple intersecting crises we\u2019re facing.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_132209\" style=\"width: 755px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-132209\" class=\"wp-image-132209\" src=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/afrika-vuka\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2021\/12\/20210630_Fossil_Free_Virunga_Screening_Senegal_Dakar_4-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"745\" height=\"559\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2021\/12\/20210630_Fossil_Free_Virunga_Screening_Senegal_Dakar_4-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2021\/12\/20210630_Fossil_Free_Virunga_Screening_Senegal_Dakar_4-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2021\/12\/20210630_Fossil_Free_Virunga_Screening_Senegal_Dakar_4-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2021\/12\/20210630_Fossil_Free_Virunga_Screening_Senegal_Dakar_4-430x323.jpg 430w, https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2021\/12\/20210630_Fossil_Free_Virunga_Screening_Senegal_Dakar_4-20x15.jpg 20w, https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2021\/12\/20210630_Fossil_Free_Virunga_Screening_Senegal_Dakar_4-1067x800.jpg 1067w, https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2021\/12\/20210630_Fossil_Free_Virunga_Screening_Senegal_Dakar_4.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-132209\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Activists from Dakar, Senegal hold signs in support of DRC activists who are fighting for a Fossil Free Virunga<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/fr\/virunga\/\"><b>Fossil Free Virunga<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) celebrated 61 years of independence from Belgian colonial rule, a short film titled &#8220;Fossil Free Virunga&#8221; was released, highlighting opposition to fossil fuel exploration in the sensitive ecosystems of Virunga National Park. Together with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/act.350.org\/sign\/non_a_lexploitation_virunga_en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Virunga petition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, this would help put more pressure on the relevant authorities to stop fossil fuel exploration in Virunga &#8211; Africa&#8217;s oldest national park which has been under threat since the government issued licenses for oil exploration in the park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In September 2021, after gathering more than 9000 signatures, environmental activists and community members in the DRC delivered the petition to parliamentarians calling for a halt to oil exploration in Virunga National Park, to be delivered to President Felix Tshisekedi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_132210\" style=\"width: 752px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-132210\" class=\"wp-image-132210\" src=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/afrika-vuka\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2021\/12\/20210930_Uproot_The_DMRE_SA_Protest_Cape_Town_IMG_5651-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"742\" height=\"494\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-132210\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Young people adding their voice to the Uproot The DMRE protest.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>#UprootTheDMRE: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also in September, hundreds of people representing dozens of civil society organisations marched to Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) offices, in every province across South Africa, under the banner #UprootTheDMRE. This was a powerful <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and amazing moment for all those who participated and united to #UprootTheDMRE. This was just the beginning &#8211; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uprootthedmre.org\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=actionkit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">there is so much more to do<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What prompted this march? Minister Mantashe and the DMRE continue to fail in their responsibilities to the people of South Africa, driving forward a heavily polluting, extremely harmful, and dysfunctional energy and mining agenda. In the face of this deep injustice, it is clear that the DMRE needs to be transformed to ensure a more socially, economically and environmentally just future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_132211\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-132211\" class=\"wp-image-132211\" src=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/afrika-vuka\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2021\/12\/20211020_Total_Knew_Kenya_Nairobi_RM_30-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-132211\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Total Knew actions in Nairobi<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>#TotalKnew: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Activists from the DRC, Togo, and Kenya took part in a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/totalknew.com\/totalknew-its-time-to-rage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ctions targeting Total <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0959378021001655\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">research released on 20 October<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> detailing that almost 50 years back, Total made the choice to overlook the impact of their core business on the Earth\u2019s climate. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In that research, three historians reveal that the managers and employees of TotalEnergies were warned of the possibility of unprecedented climate change due to the production of fossil fuels as early as 1971. The climate defenders of Ghana continue to put pressure on the government to commit to lower emissions and mobilising support for the Renewable Energy for Communities campaign in order to put Ghana well on its way to a clean energy future.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_132212\" style=\"width: 777px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-132212\" class=\"wp-image-132212\" src=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/afrika-vuka\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2021\/12\/Pic-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"767\" height=\"511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2021\/12\/Pic-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2021\/12\/Pic-768x513.png 768w, https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2021\/12\/Pic-430x287.png 430w, https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2021\/12\/Pic-20x13.png 20w, https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2021\/12\/Pic.png 851w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 100vw, 767px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-132212\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Activists protesting during COP26<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>COP26: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Going to Glasgow,\u00a0 climate activists from the most vulnerable countries who were able to make it had a \u2018red line\u2019 requesting global leaders to ensure heating stays below 1.5 \u00b0C.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Though the final agreement is not enough to solve the climate crisis, there were some positive outcomes in Glasgow. For the first time at a COP, politicians included the global phase-down of the most polluting fossil fuel &#8211; coal- and the ending of fossil fuels subsidies. This is a significant step towards the right direction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Africa prepares to host the next climate talks in Egypt, we must ensure that the summit delivers for Africa and the most vulnerable nations.
