There are two reasons why I am excited about this month\u2019s newsletter. <\/span><\/p>\n

One \u2013 our actions over the last few weeks have directly resulted in major wins for climate solutions<\/strong>. In fact, the loss and damage fund petition<\/a><\/span> you supported last month? Well, now rich countries <\/span><\/span>have just appointed a board<\/a> <\/span>for the Fund<\/span><\/span>,<\/span> a much awaited step in the right direction.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the second reason is a more celebratory one!<\/span><\/p>\n

March is a special month dedicated to women. It gives us the well-awaited opportunity to underscore how women are at the forefront of the climate crises<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

We know that women and marginalized communities face the brunt of climate<\/a><\/span> impacts. Incredibly, it is these very women who are driving systemic change in climate action. From grassroots movements to boardrooms, they are pioneering innovative solutions and amplifying vulnerable voices. Across the globe, women are <\/span>deeply connected to communities and environments<\/a><\/span>. This connection fuels their determination to protect our planet for future generations. Women\u2019s leadership isn\u2019t just crucial, it is the essence of our climate action.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In that spirit, we dedicate this edition of Fossil Free News to our foremothers and female activists. Their legacy and brave work propels us forward in the fight against climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Case You Missed It<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Ensuring our Future<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Since 2016, we\u2019ve fiercely opposed the <\/span>East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP)<\/span><\/a><\/span> due to its threats to communities and the environment. This month, we teamed up with global civil society and climate justice partners for a Global Week of Action, called <\/span>Insure Our Future.<\/span><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

Together, we called on insurance giants like SINOSURE and China Re to stop funding this destructive fossil fuel pipeline<\/strong>. We organized demonstrations, workshops, and protests across Uganda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo in EACOP-affected areas. In solidarity, our activists in the US, the UK, and Japan also targeted major insurers such as Tokio Marine, AIG, and Probitas. <\/span><\/p>\n

And the best news? Our efforts didn\u2019t go unnoticed.<\/strong> Probitas 1492, a major insurance company, has now <\/span>pledged<\/span><\/a><\/span> not to insure EACOP and the West Cumbria Coal Mine (another fossil fuel project in the UK). Our collective efforts during the Global Week of Action made this victory possible. Onward to the next!<\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Navigating the Nuclear Hype<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Nowadays, nuclear power is being marketed as a \u2018miracle\u2019 substitute for fossil fuels. At COP28, over 20 countries <\/span><\/span>announced<\/span><\/span> plans<\/span> to triple nuclear energy output by 2050.<\/span> We strongly oppose<\/span><\/a> <\/span>this.<\/span><\/p>\n

The science is crystal clear: nuclear energy is a dangerous distraction<\/strong>. Building nuclear plants is expensive and time-consuming, and they create long-lasting environmental damage due to toxic waste. <\/span><\/p>\n

Ironically, as climate change worsens, <\/span>nuclear waste that was once buried will also resurface<\/span><\/a><\/span>,<\/span> causing significant harm to the environment, food supplies, and people\u2019s lives in those regions. <\/span><\/p>\n

11 March is the anniversary of the <\/span>Fukushima Nuclear disaster in Japan<\/span><\/a><\/span> which was set in motion by a tsunami and earthquake. This disaster, forcing the evacuation of over 25,000 people, is <\/span>a tragic reminder<\/span><\/a><\/span> of the devastating human cost of nuclear power. <\/span><\/p>\n

We need to prioritize safe, democratic, and real renewable energy sources like solar and wind. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Celebrating Our True Climate Leaders<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

At 350, we\u2019re all about honoring the inspiring leadership of women in the climate movement<\/strong>. We\u2019re not just celebrating their contributions, we\u2019re downright awestruck by them. <\/span><\/p>\n

From <\/span>blazing trails<\/span><\/a><\/span> to safeguarding ancient wisdom, these women are the heart and soul of our planet\u2019s protection. We thank our Indigenous sisters whose <\/span>legacies are like roots<\/span><\/a><\/span> grounding us in this fight. A shout out to our grassroots warriors too, who are <\/span>silently but powerfully<\/span><\/a><\/span> pu<\/span><\/span>s<\/span>hing for climate justice. Their voices? Absolutely indispensable. <\/span><\/p>\n

In our quest for climate justice, women\u2019s rights aren\u2019t just a side issue \u2013 they\u2019re woven into the fabric of our struggle. As our colleague Tamara Amalia wisely says, \u201c<\/span>We cannot extinguish the flames consuming our planet while silencing the voices of those who could help us douse them.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
