But would you believe me if I&#8217;d told you that 350G-ROC actually led a campaign on stopping a coal-fired power station a few years ago?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2013, Shenzhen Energy Group of Chine approached the Ghanaian government with a proposal to build a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/world.350.org\/africa\/files\/2016\/10\/Volta-River-Authority-report.pdf?_ga=2.106541315.1833025554.1592385225-297098918.1541058320\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">700 MW coal-powered station<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Ekumfi District, Central Region of Ghana. This information led to 350G-ROC and partners such as the Ghana Youth Environment Movement (GYEM) launching the <em>Price of Pollution campaign <\/em>calling on the Ghanaian government to put a stop to this project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1788 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/afrika-vuka\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2020\/06\/GROC-workshop-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"673\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2020\/06\/GROC-workshop-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2020\/06\/GROC-workshop-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2020\/06\/GROC-workshop-430x287.jpg 430w, https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2020\/06\/GROC-workshop-20x13.jpg 20w, https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2020\/06\/GROC-workshop.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 673px) 100vw, 673px\" \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Three years later, the campaign successfully managed to convince the Ghanaian Ministry of Energy to agree to phase out the project. Responding to questions from journalists at a press briefing on\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghanabusinessnews.com\/2016\/10\/10\/ghana-is-not-building-a-coal-plant-minister\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">October 10th 2016<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the Minister of Energy outrightly said: \u201chaving gone to deposit our instrument of ratification of the Paris Agreement, we will not come back home and be permitting coal plants. Be rest assured that nobody has permission to build a coal power plant\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Following this great win, 350 G-ROC and partners launched another campaign &#8211; the <em>Renewable Energy for Communities campaign (RE4C)<\/em> in 2017 &#8211; this time to get the Ghanaian government to commit to investing in renewable energy as a solution to Ghana\u2019s energy challenges. The group continues to champion for a 100% renewable energy Ghana.
