{"id":815,"date":"2018-12-12T11:31:09","date_gmt":"2018-12-12T11:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/?p=815"},"modified":"2025-03-26T22:50:11","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T22:50:11","slug":"south-africa-energy-week-its-time-for-the-dbsa-to-makechangehappen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afrikavuka.org\/fr\/south-africa-energy-week-its-time-for-the-dbsa-to-makechangehappen\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa Energy Week:  It\u2019s time for the DBSA to #MakeChangeHappen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yesterday, together with a group of individuals and activists from various partner organisations including Project 90 by 2030, The Green Anglicans, and Fossil Free South Africa gathered outside the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.igcs-sa.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Energy Week South Africa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> summit at the Westin Hotel, in Cape Town calling on the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) to not fund the Thabametsi coal fired power station. <\/span><\/p>\n<a title=\"SA Energy Week\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/350org\/44466955850\/in\/album-72157674439272087\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-context=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4896\/44466955850_b327931180_z.jpg\" alt=\"SA Energy Week\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The summit, taking place over the 11th and 12th of December 2018 is an international gas cooperation and renewable energy gathering with energy leaders, including the DBSA meeting to showcase renewable energy gas utilisation and procurement strategies to strengthen ties in the region&#8217;s energy value chain. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The DBSA\u2019s presence at the summit was an opportunity to call on the development bank to stop undermining the good work that they\u2019re doing in investing in renewable energy by planning on financing the proposed Thabametsi coal fired power station. Plans for new coal powered development in South Africa are not consistent with the need to limit global temperature increase to below 1.5\u00b0C, as confirmed by the latest IPCC report. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/350africa.org\/thumamina-dbsa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">#ThumaMinaDBSA <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">campaign, aims to get the DBSA aims to truly live up to their vision to \u2018Make Change Happen\u2019 by publicly committing to not finance the Thabametsi coal power station. Funding coal leaves far too many South Africans exposed to longer, more intense droughts that exacerbate inequalities that already have a devastating impact on the most vulnerable in our society. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yesterday\u2019s mobilisation was about demanding real solutions to the climate crisis from the DBSA who should continue their work supporting renewable energy and commit to not fund the Thabametsi coal power plant.
